Advance >> Bible Study - Day 3

Today we are going to read a chapter in the book of Proverbs. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs so a good way to study this book is to read the chapter that matches up with the day of the month. Since today is February 17th, we will read Proverbs 17.

Proverbs 1:4 tells us that one of the purposes of Proverbs is to help young people gain knowledge and discretion. In other words, this book was written for students! It is a very practical book and is easy to read. For example: verse 17 tells us that a friend loves at all times... do you truly have your friends back at all times? Even when they are going through a rough stretch?

While you are reading, mark up your Bible... that's right, don't be afraid to take notes, underline, highlight, etc. There is nothing wrong with writing in your Bible!

When you are done reading this chapter, make a comment and let us know what parts of this chapter stuck out to you. Is there anything in your life that you need to do to line up with God's Word?

When I read any chapter of Proverbs, I see the 2 choices I have:

1: Choose wisdom and follow God!

OR

2: Reject God (um no thanks)!

So, these are the verses that stuck out to me while I as reading:

5 Those who mock the poor insult their Maker;those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.

-I don't understand those that mock the poor...don't they realize that everything they have been given isn't theirs anyways?! Who are they to think the are better than anyone?

9 Love prospers when a fault is forgiven, but dwelling on it separates close friends.

-Why do people like to fight? Is there someone you need to forgive or seek forgiveness from? Don't let pride stand in the way of forgiveness! Don't let anger ruin friendships!

22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.

-We have the choice to be cheerful or miserable. What will you choose? When we choose to be miserable, we not only break our spirit, but also the spirit of those around us.

24 Sensible people keep their eyes glued on wisdom, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.

-Are my eyes focused on the Lord and His wisdom? Is He on the forefront of my mind? Am I pursuing Him everyday?

I'm beyond perfect, but God knows that the desire of my heart is to pursue Him everyday and fill my heart with His wisdom! So, even when I fall, I know I can seek forgiveness from Him. My prayer for today is to keep my eyes focused on Him and his Word!

Verse 10 absolutely ROCKED me when I read it: "A rebuke goes deeper into a man of understanding than a hundred blows into a fool."

This is a common theme from Proverbs. Another way it says this is "only a fool despises discipline." If you HATE discipline, then you will have a tough life. Even when you are rebuked, or told that you are wrong, you should pay attention to that rebuke because it will probably be helpful to you.

If you are a fool, you will not accept a rebuke. You will hate discipline.

What happens to you when you are told that you are wrong??? Do you get mad? Do you get defensive? Proverbs says that we should LISTEN even when we dont want to... we might just benefit from what we hear!

Have you ever been in a practical joke war? It's fun for awhile until it escalate to this point you are actually worried to walk into your room for what might be waiting for you!
Proverbs 17:13 If a man pays back evil for good, evil will never leave his house.
Yikes! My parents have done so much good for me, I would hate to pay them back for that by being completely ungrateful and snotty when they ask me to do something. They are people too and there are only so many times you want to do something nice or be kind to someone who can't seem to be kind in return.
I'd rather give them a cheerful heart than a crushed spirit any day!

The verse that stuck out most to me was verse 5 "He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished"

I don't get why people make fun of the poor, it's not funny....

"Who are we to judge(or mock) the alcoholic, or the prostitute, or the addict, or the criminal as if we're any better"

Having more "stuff" than someone else doesnt give us the right to make fun of them...when we die, its not going to matter what kind of car we had or how much money we had. God is going to look at how we lived our life. We are called to help the least of these, not mock or judge them.

17 "A friend loves at all times"

22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

25 A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the one who bore him.

13 If a man pays back evil for good, evil will never leave his house.
-I have to make sure im not being snobby or mean to my parents because they do sooooooooo much for me!!!

I loved verse 22 and verse 17! I liked verse 22 because it seemed like it was saying that if you're happy you can feel it and that's good but if you are sad yu can feel it too and you know that you feel bad!
I like verse 17 because it simply says "a friend loves at all time" it makes me think hat they will not see you as anything diffrent than you are
