Personally, this is my favorite way to study Scripture. Most of the books in the New Testament were meant to be read straight through because they are letters. We need to read the whole thing to get a grasp on what the letter is saying.
So why do we have to learn the background before reading? Because if you don't know why the letter was written, who is was written to, and what the letter is addressing, then you probably wont understand it. It would be like listening to one side of a phone call. In order to make sense of a phone call you need to hear what both sides are saying. It is the same way with the books of the Bible.
Today, you will watch a short video to learn the background of Colossians and then click on the link to listen and read the whole book straight through. When you are done, make a comment and let us know how you liked it!

Wow! That just rocked me! The Bible never gets old...
Chapter 3 was amazing. The insight on how we should live based on our salvation in Christ is so convicting. We are not called to walk in the old way of life, which is a selfish, self-serving way... we are called to live as holy sons and daughters of a King! The old way of life wont even be attractive when we are seeking the Lord with our whole heart!
I have to ask myself: Do I have a compassionate heart? Do I have humility? Do I have patience? If not, these are the areas that I need to BEG God to control. I cannot get these on my own strength, but need to rely on the Lord to give them to me.
I also LOVE 3:23 - Work at EVERYTHING with all your heart! What if I am a garbage man? Be a garbage man with all your heart! What if I am an NFL football player? Be an NFL football player with all your heart! It is not about WHAT you do, it is HOW you do it that God is concerned with! Does your attitude display Christ no matter what you are doing? If not, ask the Lord to help you.
I love this book and I will end with verse 1 of chapter 3 - "If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God."
1:15-20. Love it! Those verses get me super hype! I know those verses are true, but to continually read how UNIQUE Christ is...def. doesn't get old!
"He is the image of the invisible God" (1:15). God is invisible - we are told this throughout the Bible. But, God became visible through his Son!
Keep reading...He is preeminent. There is no other in His category. There's only one Christ. He is unique. He is incomparable. He is matchless. He brought peace between God and man by the blood shed on the cross - an incomprehensible love!
Christ is the image of the Invisible God...so awesome!
Versus that stuck out the most for me:
1:13-14 "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."
1:15-16 "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers of authorities; all things were created by him and for him"
2:6-7 "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness"
3:13 "Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against on another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you"
3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord not for men."
It's so crazy the little things that stick out at you - for by Him everything was created? We don't often thing of Jesus being in the creative process-I wonder what animals he designed? It's so good to dig deep and wonder.
